Kinky Electric Noise – Electro Champeta

Champeta Criolla (Palenque Records)

Champeta culture and music originated in the poor, mainly black communities of Colombia’s pacific coast. The style, which was popularised in the 1970s, is a true fusion of traditional African rhythms and dances with everything from salsa to reggaeton all pumped out through the wonderfully colourful picós soundsystems (some great photos on Africolombia).

More recently Champeta has received international attention be it from internationally recognised Colombian acts such as Bomba Estereo citing the music as an influence or ‘Global Bass’ DJs and producers beginning to incorporate it into their sets and tracks.Case in point: Miami based Kinky Electric Noise and his ‘Perreo Digital (A Trip into Electric Champeta)‘ EP released for free download this week.

Kinky Electric Noise – Tremenda Makinaria

The EP takes Champeta samples and rhythms and peppers them with pumping basses and snappy snares. Download available in 320MP3 or WAV. Also check out Caballo’s piece on the Tropical Bass blog with info on lots more groups pushing the Electro-Champeta sound.
